With the new solo album Birdcatcher II by keyboardist Roel Spanjers you wander through a rich musical landscape that sounds familiar, but fortunately leaves much to the imagination. In the 'roots-noir' songs you hear echoes of Bobby Charles, Hi Records Soul from Memphis, Americana à la The Band and the New Orleans of Allen Toussaint. It is an album full of varied songs that are strongly connected musically, thematically and atmospherically and in which tradition is honored in a fresh and personal way.

Pianist and soulful Hammond player Spanjers is a much sought-after live and studio (session) musician in the European rhythm & blues, soul and roots/Americana scene. He toured with artists as diverse as Luther Allison, Terry Evans, Normaal, Frédérique Spigt, JW Roy, Dayna Kurtz, Curtis Salgado, Smokey Wilson, Roscoe Chenier and many others.

Birdcatcher II was released in September 2024 on Suburban Records. The album was recorded with guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Eric van Dijsseldonk, drummer/producer Gabriel Peeters and several guests, including Texas soul singer Malford Milligan, and was mastered by Kevin Reeves in Nashville.
