Five cellos play works by Bach, Debussy, Brahms and Dvořák, among others.
Since 2019, Joachim Eijlander has been a principal cello teacher at the Rotterdam Conservatory Codarts. Every year, he presents a concert with a number of his students in the Heerenhuys, this time with works by Bach, Debussy, Brahms and Dvořák, among others.
Eijlander says about the training and the program:
“One of the things that makes playing in a cello ensemble so much fun is the blurring of the boundaries between styles. The instruments find each other just as easily in classical music as in pop. With its large range from low to high, the cello lends itself well to playing together, which is also reflected in the emergence of more and more new cello ensembles. In addition, Codarts holds the idea of connecting in high regard. Music cannot be captured in a certain style but connects, shifts and blurs boundaries.
It is a recurring celebration to give a concert in the Heerenhuys together with my students. The final year students who play this time come from Portugal, Italy, Spain and Montenegro.
We play in quartet and quintet form and each student solos in the middle of the program with a work that is tailor-made for him/her. In the ensemble pieces you hear what makes the cello so special: the instruments sing in all registers with a beautiful buzzing harmony.”
