Guy Salamon Group

The Guy Salamon Group is one of the most remarkable bands in the Dutch jazz scene. The relatively young octet has made a strong impression on audiences and critics throughout Europe in recent years. The last time the group played in LantarenVenster, the roof pretty much came off. Their new album Free Hugs will be released in the spring of 2024. Reason enough to invite this idiosyncratic, humorous and highly original composer and drummer again for a concert on the Wilhelminapier.

Free Hugs was recorded in Girona, Spain. The music of this third album unfolds in a post-absurdist dimension, telling the adventures of the Shmoskers, a small group of Egg-X people, who find their way home after being lost in an alternate universe for a long time. The album contains ten brand new compositions full of wild improvisations and carefully developed melodies, which showcase the group's unique, chaotic but coherent sound.

Salamon worked as a drummer with Jesse van Ruller, Reinier Baas, Jasper Blom and Tineke Postma, among others. He grew up in Jerusalem in a musical family, after which he attended the Jerusalem School for the Arts and the Tel Aviv Conservatory. In 2014 he moved to the Netherlands to continue his studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he formed his Guy Salamon Group. The music is at times reminiscent of bands such as the Willem Breuker Kollektief and Charlie Hadens Liberation Music Orchestra, ignores the boundaries of genres and styles, and hints at contemporary jazz with influences ranging from Tom Waits to Scandinavian children's songs, from Charles Mingus to Irish jigs, from Nino Rota to punk rock, and from Balkan music to free improvisation.
