Global Music Nights: Lydia Stavraki & Nizar Rohana trio
Four unique music evenings with established names and new talent
Global Music Nights presents a series of double concerts in which traditions and folklore go hand in hand with new perspectives. Each evening features an established name alongside a promising emerging act: two artists, two different styles, and each with their own musical story. Discover four evenings full of special music and get to know both familiar names and new talents!
1st concert
Lydia Stavraki
A fresh take on boleros and bossa nova, shaped by jazz and Greek influences. In her project, Lydia brings her own cultural background into dialogue with Cuban and Brazilian traditions, which are interwoven through original compositions and innovative arrangements.
2nd concert
With his oud, Nizar Rohana brings a personal perspective to the rich musical traditions of the Arab world. He began playing the instrument at the age of twelve and grew into an important Palestinian oud player and composer. In his music, Arab and Middle Eastern traditions come together with influences from jazz, improvisation, and Western classical music. His compositions are always searching for new possibilities within the centuries-old language of the oud.
“Nizar’s playing is an excellent reminder of how music can transcend borders” — Klof Magazine
Rohana has lived in the Netherlands since 2013 and collaborates here with musicians from different musical worlds. For his new trio, he forms a special combination with double bassist Tony Overwater and percussionist Ruven Ruppik. Together they create an open and layered sound, in which melody, rhythm, and improvisation constantly find one another. A concert in which tradition does not sound like a fixed given, but as a starting point for new music.
