Fucking Åmål

Queer Pioneers is a new monthly program from LantarenVenster. Here we focus on makers who have pushed boundaries with their films in the areas of sexuality, orientation and gender. Before the performance, Renske Diks, guest programmer of Queer Pioneers, gives an introduction with excerpts from her favorite LGBTQ+ films. On Wednesday, March 25, we kick off with Fucking Åmål (1998), a heart-warming portrait of the budding love between two teenage girls. There is not much to do in the boring Swedish provincial town of Åmål. The gloomy teenager Agnes (Rebecca Liljeberg) has only lived there for a short time and does not belong there. She is secretly in love with Elin (Alexandra Dahlström), the most popular girl in school, but has nowhere to express her feelings. Agnes' world collapses when Elin humiliates her at her 16th birthday party. But Elin, who becomes fascinated by Agnes' courage, regrets this afterwards. The two slowly grow closer to each other. This feature debut by Lukas Moodysson was very well received everywhere. For example, online magazine Autostraddle for lesbian, bisexual and queer women put the film at number 1 in their Top Ten Best Lesbian Films. In Åmål itself people were less enthusiastic: they feared damage to their image. People have now also embraced the film there with the annual Fucking Åmål Pop Festival .
