Foxtrot De Annie M.G. Schmidt & Harry Bannink musical
Dancing on a volcano.
Foxtrot is one of the greatest successes of Annie MG Schmidt and Harry Bannink: founders of the original Dutch 'mjoeziekul'. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Schmidt's death. As an ode, a brand new version of this musical can be seen at the Luxor Theater.
Story
Foxtrot is set in the turbulent 1930s. A time of carefree fun but also of worries about the threat of war and an economic crisis. The story begins when the naive Josien leaves the province and ends up in an artists' boarding house in Amsterdam. There she meets Jules and Lisette: revue stars in a nightclub on the bustling Rembrandtplein. Boarding house owner Mathilde lets Jules and Lisette pretend to be a German teacher and an opera singer. Josien takes lessons from Jules and quickly falls head over heels in love with him, but he cannot return that love. When Paul - Jules' secret love - then shares a bed with Josien, this results in a pregnancy and the making of impossible choices.
Classic
This musical classic contains songs that are etched in our collective memory: 'Dansen op een Vulkaan', 'Sorry dat ik besta' and of course the grand showbiz opening song 'De dertiger jaren'. The now 80-year-old Gerrie van der Klei can be seen again in the musical after 47 years, this time as pensioner Mathilde. The rest of the cast consists of Renée de Gruijl (De Mol en de Paradijsvogel, Malle Babbe) and many others.
Let yourself be carried away by this quintessential Dutch story full of humor and tragedy, glitter & glamour and the sharp pen of Annie MG Schmidt.
