Power, submission, and the breaking down of existing identities. French philosopher Michel Foucault (1926-1984) wrote about how our identity is connected to the power relations that influence us, such as at a university, in a family, or in a heteronormative society. How is our identity shaped by these power structures? And above all: can we break away from existing identities?
During the lecture "Foucault Now!", Prof. Marli Huijer will discuss Michel Foucault's theories of power, his concept of parrhesia (truth-telling), and our fixation on identities. He doesn't see power as something imposed from above; rather, it's something at work in and around us, to which we are subjected, thus becoming a self or a particular identity. This extends to our daily interactions and language use. Is there still room for freedom? Can you speak of yourself differently, tell different truths, and create another self? Foucault's work can help us critically examine ourselves and the world around us. To look beyond the present and initiate new forms of existence.
Prof. Marli Huijer is Professor Emeritus of Public Philosophy at the Erasmus School of Philosophy and a former Thinker Laureate. Huijer's research focuses on the philosophy of humankind and culture. She is particularly interested in how people arrive at order. How do we organize time? How do technologies and devices shape public space?
