Five days that changed the world
Kamerkoor Toonkunst Rotterdam presents a program with the theme change. Using personal stories, we will search for what change means in people's lives. We do this together with Rotterdam speaker Arjan Erkel and JaJa Zingen Voor Kids.
With the central piece “Five days that changed the world” by Bob Chilcott, we take you along major historical events described from a personal perspective: the invention of the printing press, the abolition of slavery, the first powered flight, the discovery of penicillin and the first man in space. Each of these events is the source of inspiration for another piece, such as “Northern Lights” by Ola Gjeilo or the African American spiritual “Witness”. “Stars” by Ēriks Ešenvalds is very special, in which an ensemble of singing glasses merges with the voices of the choir.
The young composer Juliette Romboti, winner of the Innovation in Music Award 2022, created the commissioned composition “O Noblissima viriditas”. She chose the future as a perspective.
Children still have most of their lives ahead of them. How do they - in their relatively short lives - look at what has changed their lives for them? Together with JaJa Zingen Voor Kids we create a collage composition in which this is expressed.
Arjan Erkel
In 2002, Arjan was kidnapped while working for Doctors Without Borders in the Russian state of Dagestan. How did this change him and how did it affect his future? We intertwine his personal story with music.
