'I Swear' tells the story of the smart, funny John Davidson. He is a talented soccer goalkeeper who dreams of a professional career, and he is also among the best at school. But then he suddenly starts swearing and moving uncontrollably. At a time when Tourette's syndrome was barely understood even by doctors, he becomes isolated from the world around him: he is bullied at school and his relationship with his family deteriorates. John withdraws more and more, burdened by fear, shame, and loneliness. Everything changes when, as a twenty-something, he meets Dottie, the down-to-earth mother of a former classmate who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. The unexpected bond that develops between them changes John's life: with Dottie's unconditional support, he finds a purpose and the self-confidence to be himself.
