Every last Wednesday of the month it's movie night at Het Witte Paard, this month: "Conclave"
The Pope is dead: “Long live the Pope!” and everything that precedes it. A beautifully stylized and, okay: exciting thriller with a very unexpected ending. Well worth watching, if only for the beautiful film images. Of course, preceded by a fitting meal. Mama mia: what will that be?
When the Pope dies, the thoughtful Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is given the difficult task of guiding the closed votes for a new church leader. What mortal can carry the church's ideals without disgracing them? Lawrence must navigate between favorite and outsider, sectional interests and unity, conservatives and liberals. In addition, character traits such as vanity and service, certainty and (faith) doubt play a role. And then there are skeletons in the closet and the outside world breaks in. Solid church-political thriller with an eye for traditional details from the director of All Quiet on the Western Front, based on the pattern of the classic 12 Angry Men, with a surprising denouement.
