Film HAMNET
The film Hamnet, based on the book of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell, tells the story of the loss of Shakespeare's son Hamnet in 1596 and the impact of this on his family. This film is part of De Week van de Herinnering and is about grief, mourning and the memories that remain.
About the film Hamnet
Some films tell a story. Others let you feel where a story might come from. Hamnet belongs to the latter category.
The film is not primarily about Shakespeare, theatre, or the famous writer he would later become. It is about something much more human: what happens when someone you love is suddenly gone. About grief, about the silence that follows, and about the question of whether such a loss can ever be captured in words.
The story
Hamnet, the 11-year-old son of William Shakespeare, died in 1596. Historically, we know very little about him. His name and his date of death have been preserved, but otherwise he is mainly a footnote in history.
In her novel Hamnet, author Maggie O’Farrell asked herself a different question: what if we take not Shakespeare, but his family and especially the loss of Hamnet as a starting point? What does such a loss do to a mother, a father, and a family?
The film follows that thought. You do not see a simple story in which grief is great at first and then neatly concluded. Mourning has no clear beginning and end. Sometimes life just seems to go on, and sometimes the grief suddenly returns. In small moments, in memories, in silence.
