What happens when the outside world no longer sees you? Femke Arnouts and Nanette Edens explore this in 'Wanda’s Sleep'. Wanda, a middle-aged woman, notices that she seems to be becoming invisible. She seeks help, but is told that this is part of her age. Wanda refuses to accept this. The performance depicts her struggle to be seen again. Is invisibility a liberation, or does life feel empty without a connection to others?
The aging woman
'Wanda’s Sleepless Night' is not about motherhood or menopause. It is a vivid and loving narrative about the aging woman. Women over 40 often disappear from the public eye. If they are seen at all, they have to look like they are 30. This performance gives the aging woman a stage and makes her visible again. It is an absurdist piece that exposes the invisibility of women in a relatable way.
