Doron Langberg

Large-scale paintings that still feel intimate: from Thursday 1 February 2024, you can become part of the world of the artist Doron Langberg (1985). The exhibition Part of Your World is a direct and emotional reflection on the artist’s life as a queer man. From sweeping landscapes to tender portraits: with his colourful and expressive brush strokes Langberg captures his friends, lovers, family and surroundings. The result is a body of work, from which the Kunsthal will be showing a selection of 15 paintings, that is as touching as it is seductive.

Born in Israel, Langberg has been living and working in New York since his student days. Not shying away from explicit depictions, his work mainly focuses on queer intimacy. This focus also affects other themes within his work, for example, his abstract flower paintings and depictions of his mother or his husband contain the same sensuality and tenderness. Although Langberg’s identity is inextricably linked to his choice of subject matter, and he frequently portrays the queer community, he is also interested in universal human experiences such as loss, affection, and physicality.

Direct observation

Many of Langberg’s compositions take place in domestic settings or in landscapes that are significant to him, like the immediate surroundings of his parental home, or the beach of Fire Island, a queer refuge off the New York coast. In the open air or during sessions with portrait subjects, Langberg first translates his direct observations to small preliminary studies. Subsequent separate composition drawings, colour studies and instinctive brush strokes eventually evolve into the up to five meter wide, lively paintings Langberg is known for.

Explosive use of colour

As part of the long tradition of figurative painting - drawing inspiration from renowned artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Edgar Degas - Langberg researches the possibilities of colour, for instance for capturing the incidence of light, or conveying certain emotions. In the exhibition, a gripping example of this is the monumental work Bather (2021), which confronts the spectator with Langberg’s husband taking a bath. Glistening violets, reds, and yellows are bleeding into each other. The sky seems to be intoxicating and nearby, as if the spectators themselves are standing in the smouldering bathroom.
