Dogtooth 2009

The blackly comic film Dogtooth by Yorgos Lanthimos ( Kinds of Kindness, Poor Things, The Favourite, The Lobster ) was awarded the Prix Un Certain Regard at its premiere in Cannes in 2009 and marked the international breakthrough for the Greek director: the film only won no fewer than twenty international awards and was nominated for an Oscar. This controversial classic can finally be admired on the silver screen again, 15 years after its release. Dogtooth tells the story of a couple who raise their three adult children in complete isolation within the confines of their house and garden. The parents create a bizarre alternative reality, so that the children have no awareness of the outside world. To them, airplanes flying overhead look like a toy and a neighbor's cat is a monster. The children believe that they cannot leave the house until their "dog canine" falls out. The film is an intriguing mix of absurdity and oppression, which explores the boundaries of control, education and freedom. With his unique style and characteristic awkward humor, Dogtooth forms the basis of Lanthimos' impressive oeuvre.
