De Middagvrouw

A moving film adaptation of Julia Francks' historical bestseller of the same name, in which the focus is not on war violence, but on the compelling story of a young woman and her brave fight against injustice. In the bustling Berlin of the 1920s, the Jewish sisters Helene and Martha each want to follow their own path. Martha enjoys the wild nightlife, while Helene dreams of a career as a doctor and works as a pharmacy assistant. She meets Karl, the love of her life, but their plans are destroyed when the Nazi regime advances and Karl dies. Broken meets Helene Wilhelm, who initially supports her but whose views later clash with hers. They have a son together, whom Helene raises largely alone, while motherhood and denying her origins are difficult for her. After the war, Helene makes a rigorous decision. With her film adaptation, Austrian filmmaker Barbara Albert (co-producer of Toni Erdmann and Quo vadis, Aida?) presents an extremely emotional film about a young German woman in wartime who faces impossible dilemmas. Mala Emde (Und morgen die ganze Welt) plays this intriguing character and is assisted by Thomas Prenn (Große Freiheit) and Max von der Groeben (Hinterland, Lindenberg! Mach dein Ding) as her lovers.
