de kracht van beeldtaal: djanko

Djanko, pseudonym for Herman Jan Couwenberg, became a cartoonist by chance. His then upstairs neighbor Roland Vonk showed him drawings of Kamagurka. His simple drawings inspired him to depict funny dialogues. Thanks to a tip from Vonk, he started signing for the Vrije Volk on a trial basis. He quickly got a permanent contract there because he stood out for making jokes quickly and to the point. Later he worked for years for the Rotterdams Dagblad and the AD, the VPRO guide, comic magazine zone 5300 and a number of other magazines. According to Djanko, cartooning is a form of intelligence. Quickly understand what is going on somewhere and where the tension is and then translate that tension into a playful picture. In addition to being a cartoonist, Djanko is also a songwriter. His and radio presenter Vonk's paths also crossed in that area.

In Reading Room Rotterdam West, Djanko and Roland Vonk meet again and together they delve into the special story of this much sought-after cartoonist-songwriter. A story richly illustrated with cartoons and live music by Djanko.
