Director Stijn Bouma, known for the documentary Alleen tegen de staat (Alone against the State) about the Child Benefit Scandal, now presents The Hunt for Meral Ö.: a gripping drama based on true events that exposes the profound impact of this painful affair from the Rutte era. Meral Öztürk becomes desperate when the Tax Authorities wrongly demand a huge refund of €34,000 in childcare allowance. Despite her protests, her entire salary from home care is seized from one day to the next. While her life falls apart, she discovers that a social investigator is infiltrating her life and interfering more and more intrusively with her private life. While she tries to keep everything as normal as possible for her daughters Pinar and Ayse, the pressure increases when the state even threatens to remove her children from the home. The emotional pressure on the family builds up, forcing Meral to make radical choices to protect her family.
