Crossing Tables #9 Narrative Native Dining: Verhalen van migratie aan tafel
An artist, chef, or collective brings flavors and migration stories together in a sensory experience. Every third Thursday of the month at 6:00 PM at Plein. This dinner invites you to discover how Dutch food culture has been influenced by the history of migration in daily life. Through food, objects, and rituals, the evening shows how the past continues to resonate in how we eat today.
About the dinner
You will share a four-course meal inspired by Taiwan, China, Korea, and Italy. Each course is created by a different designer. They research the migration history from these countries to the Netherlands. As a result, you see how historical recipes appear on your plate today. In this way, the designers connect the past with the present.
Shared stories and history
One of the corridors refers to a historical object from the Fenix collection: the sheet music for the classic *Pinda Pinda* (1933). During the economic crisis of the 1930s, many Chinese workers in the Rotterdam harbor lost their jobs. Some then sold tengteng, a sweet peanut cookie, to survive. The peanut cookie was popular. The vendors did not receive a warm welcome everywhere.
Cultural memory
The song serves as a starting point during dinner. You reflect on how people viewed Chinese dockworkers and street vendors in the Netherlands. You also see how those images are still part of the cultural memory. In this way, food becomes a way to share stories and history.
