Carolina Markowicz, an acclaimed Brazilian director, wowed audiences with her short film The Orphan , which won the Queer Palm at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Her latest film Charcoal compellingly highlights the complexity of human relationships and moral dilemmas. In Charcoal, Markowicz takes us to rural Brazil, where Irene and her family struggle with poverty, drinking problems and illness. When a health worker makes a shocking proposal to replace the ailing grandfather with an absconding Argentine drug lord, a chain of events begins that plunges the family into chaos. As the mysterious newcomer, Miguel, influences the lives of Irene, her husband Jairo and their son Jean, hidden desires and secrets are revealed. Jairo begins a secret affair, Irene finds strength and fascination in Miguel's presence, while Jean becomes increasingly drawn to the criminal's dark lifestyle. Charcoal offers a moving look at the fragility of family bonds, the temptation of crime and the complexity of human desires, woven into a compelling thriller.
