Cello Perspectives - George Crotty and Iván Nogueira
Solo cello explorations between folk, rhythm, and global improvisation / Celloverkenningen tussen folk, ritme en wereldse improvisatie.
Two approaches to the cello unfold side by side. Cellists George Crotty and Iván Nogueira each present a solo program shaped by their own musical backgrounds, influences, and curiosity. For both musicians, the cello becomes a space for rhythm, storytelling, experimentation, and personal expression.
Drawing from various musical languages, from folk traditions to improvisation and global influences, the concert moves through contrasting soundscapes and unexpected textures, inviting the audience into an intimate and constantly changing listening experience.
- About the cellists:
Canadian cellist George Crotty developed a distinctive, groundbreaking cello language in Toronto's diverse music scene. His work draws from jazz traditions, post-bop, and modal jazz, alongside influences from Indian raga and Arabic maqam—a modern, genre-transcending approach rooted in curiosity and exchange.
Iván Nogueira presents work from his solo project “On.Cello”, rooted in Celtic-tinged folkloric materials and melodic narrative forms, reworked for solo cello. The project, started in 2021, is an ongoing personal exploration of polyphony, rhythm, sound, and the expression of identity.
