From the end of 1979 to the summer of 1985, the two men maintained an intense artistic friendship, which forms the starting point for the performance. Dramaturge Katja Hieminga and spoken word artist YMP (Mich Simon) use this story as a metaphor for the connection between themselves as friends and as theater makers in the broader context of current intercultural transitions in the arts field.

As art icons, Basquiat and Warhol each left a lasting mark on modern art and pop culture of the late twentieth century in their own unique way. The men meet against the backdrop of New York's thriving underground scene. Basquiat is a young, emerging artist at the time. He works as a graffiti artist mainly at night on the streets, under the name SAMO, and will quickly become a respected artist in the avant-garde art world. Andy Warhol has been an established name as the godfather of the pop art movement for over ten years, but during that period he was experiencing an impasse.
