Black Sabbath – The Ballet
Birmingham is not only the home of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, it is also the place where the heavy metal band Black Sabbath forged its unique sound. Classical dance and heavy metal music is a surprising combination. Carlos Acosta (artistic director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet) ingeniously combines the musical heritage of that city with classical dance language. Acosta was inspired by the work and the impact that the band Black Sabbath, the founders of heavy metal, had on Birmingham.
In addition to full orchestrations of legendary songs such as Paranoid and Iron Man, new music was also composed, performed live in the new Luxor by Sinfonia Rotterdam.
This music forms the basis for the dance, created by the renowned choreographer Pontus Lidberg and by Carlos Acosta himself. Furthermore, composer Chris Austin, writer Richard Thomas and the members of Black Sabbath were closely involved in the history of this danced metal symphony.
Expect a theatrically spectacular dance and music performance that will leave sparks flying in this intriguing new response to the music and legacy of Black Sabbath.
