Bird

Twelve-year-old Bailey lives with her single father Bug and her brother Hunter in a dilapidated squat in North Kent. Her bedroom is a sleeping bag on the floor separated by a transparent curtain. She looks for every opportunity to escape. Because of her fascination with birds, Bailey spends day and night on the top of an apartment block. Here she looks out over the city and disappears into her thoughts. Architecture has been central to Andrea Arnold's social-realist work from the beginning. Red Road in particular is a fantastic example of a building as a character in film, namely the Red Road social housing project in Glasgow. But in Fish Tank too, the apartment building and its connotation with the British working class are central. Bird is a contemporary fable and authentic portrait of contemporary youth with actors Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski.
