Bewaren Natuurlijk
The collection of the Natural History Museum contains almost 400,000 objects. Why and especially how these natural history objects are preserved is the subject of the exhibition 'Preserving Naturally'.
In the completely renovated Museum room (thanks to the support of the Friends of Natural History) you can see in which ways a dead bird can be preserved, why some animals are preserved in liquid, why fossils do not fall apart and how the shell collection is preserved. The accompanying film shows how the museum's preparators process plants, butterflies, a fox and a wood mouse into collection pieces. Unique archive footage from 1996 shows the boning of our sperm whale on the beach of Kijkduin.
For children, 'Storing Naturally' includes activities such as guessing which animal the insides belong to and hanging the correct food next to the correct skull.
