Jazz and improvisation composed to Dante's climb of mount Purgatory // Jazz and improvisation written to accompany Dante's climb of mount Purgatory.
After the success of their Inferno-inspired album, Ambrosia once again dives into the world of Dante – this time with Purgatorio as a guiding principle. Bandleader and composer Ruud Voesten translates the seven terraces of the Purgatory into layered compositions that move between darkness and enlightenment. The music reflects the path from introspection to hope, from pride and envy to purification and peace. Ambrosia’s signature sound – a combination of contemporary jazz, classical influences and subtle electronics – is enhanced by the space for improvisation, in which each band member explores the emotional landscape of Dante’s poetry. Each piece is dedicated to a deadly sin, but together it forms a journey upwards, towards the light. The result is a powerful, expressive and narrative concert that touches and surprises. The band consists of Mo van der Does (alto saxophone), Wietse Voermans (tenor saxophone), Floris Kappeyne (piano/synths), Tijs Klaassen (double bass) and Ruud Voesten (drums/composition). This evening is part of the Batavierhuis x North Sea Round Town concert series – where there is room for experiment, deepening and groundbreaking musical research.
