Anora
Director Sean Baker (Tangerine, The Florida Project) won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his comedy drama about the love between Russian fake baby Ivan and New York sex worker Anora. He wants to marry her, but his family has very different ideas. For Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, a dream seems to come true when she meets the son of a Russian oligarch and the two decide to get married on impulse. But as soon as the news reaches Russia, the fairytale seems to end badly when his parents travel to New York to have the marriage annulled. Anora is a full-blooded comedy and a crowd-pleaser; rarely has there been such exuberant laughter at a premiere in Cannes. The film is often reminiscent of the work of the Coen Brothers, but then at the speed of a roller coaster, a series of chaotic scenes. Mikey Madison is great in the leading role of Ivan, although the show is stolen by Yura Borisov, who was seen last year in Hytti nro 6.
