After us Theater Rotterdam: Davy Pieters
In a stark white room, an old woman looks back on her life and concludes that she felt most alive in the presence of death.
She is confronted with the temporary nature of life and her environment. The warming earth, the melting ice, the rising water, the dying people; Some things you only see clearly when you look far back.
In After us, an intimate and poetic performance about disappearing and saying goodbye, theater maker Davy Pieters investigates how our dealing with death relates to our relationship with nature. The performance moves through time like a film, past compelling memories and major events. We say goodbye to natural phenomena, to snow and freezing, we lose land and living space to the rising water. How do we deal with the disappearance of things, and how do you find something to hold on to when everything is transient?
After us is the final part of Pieters' science fiction four-parter about growing up in a future world. Her work is characterized by its strong visual, physical and cinematic style. For this performance, Pieters collaborates with an air artist, who brings the ultimate temporary onto the stage: an ever-changing cloud.
