What if your boundaries slowly shift until fear and pain become the new normal?
How does violence creep into your life so gradually, until it is constantly present? And how do you escape from it? Behind Closed Doors is a compelling mosaic story about the (mostly) invisible world of dominance and oppression, exploitation, psychological and physical violence that takes place off-screen. But also about the strength of those who suffer from it and the resilience that keeps them going.
The performance brings real stories – transformed into fiction – to life with a unique narrative form: puppetry. Actors Urmie Plein, Alexander Brouwer and Cat Smits provide a powerful insight into this complex world, because you experience and feel all perspectives: the partner, the child, the social worker, the police, the neighbors, the bystanders and the politicians. No one deliberately starts a violent relationship; the boundary of what is acceptable shifts every day. Until fear and pain have become the new normal.
