A story of displacement
In the new dance/circus show by Panama Pictures we meet a group of people who have drifted, searching for a familiar place, a home. Staggering on uncertain ground, they are in danger of perishing and being left behind. In this no-land they are dependent on each other.
In this isolated landscape of rocky, sloping surfaces and undulating floorboards, different laws of nature seem to apply: they break the performers’ fall, distort and burden their movements, but sometimes also almost let them fly, creating a new, fascinating movement idiom. With A story of displacement, Panama Pictures shows how we relate to our environment and how we interact with each other in disruptive times.
The quest in A story of displacement takes place in an inhospitable landscape with rocky sloping surfaces and undulating floorboards, which turn out to be elastic. These springy floorboards break the performers’ fall, distort and weigh down their movements and sometimes even let them almost fly – moments of weightlessness form a sharp contrast with the sliding, tumbling and seeking grip. In this isolated landscape, different laws of nature seem to apply, creating a new, fascinating movement idiom.
