INTERCEPTED
Intercepted by Oksana Karpovych 2024, Ukraine, 95 minutes, Ukrainian and Russian with English subtitles.
Set against the backdrop of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Intercepted weaves together intercepted phone calls between Russian soldiers and their families with images of destroyed Ukrainian towns. The conversations, sometimes chilling in their banality, reveal a jarring disconnect between those who wage war and the reality they leave in their wake. As domestic chatter collides with landscapes of devastation, the film exposes the everyday absurdities and normalized violence behind imperial aggression. The film premiered at the Berlinale Forum 2024 and was the winner of the Grand Prix at RIDM Montreal in 2024.
Oksana Karpovych (born 1988 in Ukraine) is a filmmaker and photographer based in Kyiv and Montreal. Her work explores themes of memory, colonialism and resistance through documentary forms.
Field Recordings is a platform for experimental film, sound and audiovisual anthropology, with a focus on work that explores the relationship between people, place and environment. We regularly organise a three-day festival in Rotterdam, alongside screenings, talks and listening sessions throughout the year.
The name refers to a way of working that involves recording images and sounds in the field, with close attention to one's surroundings. This approach connects the wide range of works we present, from contemporary experiments and new voices to overlooked historical films. Our programme brings together artists, filmmakers and researchers working across disciplines and places emphasis on process, method and shared questions.
