Waste is created everywhere where people live, work and eat. That is the case now, but it was the same in the past. Garbage that is hundreds or even thousands of years old: the archaeologist is happy with it! The waste that is found says something about what people used to do in daily life, how they prepared their food, what they ate and whether they were poor or rich.

During excavations, archaeologists work like garbage collectors: they collect the waste after a delay of hundreds or thousands of years. Then, like real detectives, they sift through the garbage to find out what it says about people in the past.
