Hour of Art - Breitner's modernity

Hour of Art is the monthly free art lecture of the Rotterdam Library. Art expert and cultural historian Hoo Man Chan always gives you a new, in-depth insight into a work of art or artist. This month: Breitner's modernity.

Thanks to his talent, Hendrik Breitner was considered a great promise in the late 19th century art world in The Hague. Once he moved to the culturally vibrant Amsterdam, he quickly developed into a talented painter of modern life in the city. Breitner was at the core of and one of the leaders of the avant-garde movement in Early Modern Dutch painting. Blobs of paint could remain visible and what was depicted could be ugly, as long as it was truthful. Authenticity expressed in a raw way. But the choice of certain subjects was also unprecedented and even innovative for that time. In a new exhibition in the Singer Museum, the focus is once again on Breitner; In this lecture by Hoo-Man we learn about the talent, style and innovation of the special painter.
