Tramhuis
The Old Tram House is the former station building of the RTM (Rotterdam Tramway Company). It has been completely dismantled, carefully restored, and transformed into the first kiosk for city walks.
Tramhuis Rotterdam: A Historic Landmark and Starting Point for City Walks
Right in the centre of Rotterdam, the Tramhuis stands as a small but striking reminder of the city’s past. Built in 1914 as a tram waiting shelter, this Art Nouveau structure is defined by its light steel-and-glass design, giving it a transparent and elegant presence on Eendrachtsplein.
Remarkably, the building survived the bombing of 1940. In the decades that followed, it was moved several times as the city was rebuilt. By the 1970s, it had taken on a new life as a hospitality venue, a use that proved less suited to its delicate construction.
Restoration and a new role
In recent years, the Tramhuis has been carefully restored on the initiative of Stadsherstel Rotterdam and Droom en Daad. The structure was taken apart and rebuilt with close attention to its original design, before returning to its historic location.
Today, it serves a new purpose as a kiosk for city walks, offering a welcoming starting point to explore Rotterdam on foot.
