A hundred years ago, the Leuvehaven - located in the Maritime District - was still in full use: there were several breweries and the sea fish market was the center for the fish trade in Rotterdam. During the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940, all buildings around the Leuvehaven were destroyed. Nowadays you will find the Maritime Museum, various restaurants with a terrace and the war memorial De Verwoeste Stad.
About Leuvehaven
Nowadays, the Leuvehaven offers space for the oldest shipping museum in the Netherlands: the Maritime Museum. On historic ships and cranes you can experience how the world port of Rotterdam came into being at this location. In the months of July and August, the Maritime Museum organizes boat trips through the Leuvehaven and surrounding inland ports.
Behind the Maritime Museum is The Destroyed City. The bronze statue by Ossip Zadkine depicts a human figure without a heart, symbolizing Rotterdam, which was hit in the heart by the German bombing.
There are several restaurants on the Leuvehaven with a terrace, including the Down Under restaurant of the Mainport Hotel. One of the most striking restaurants is Vessel11, on a bright red lightship moored in the Leuvehaven. The deck is a sunny terrace, where you can enjoy typical English dishes and home-made V11 beer.
The Leuvehaven is located in the Maritime District. Beurs Metro Station is a 1-minute walk away, where several tram lines also stop. The Beursplein parking garage is approximately 2 minutes away. The Leuvehaven also has a jetty for the fast Water Taxi and for the Hotel New York Ferry Service.
