Laurenskerk Rotterdam

The Laurenskerk is the only remaining medieval building in Rotterdam's city centre. Climb the 63 metre high tower or attend an event in the monumental church.

Laurenskerk Rotterdam: Medieval Heritage in the City Centre

In the heart of Rotterdam stands the Laurenskerk, the city’s only remaining medieval building. Constructed between the mid-15th and early 16th centuries and carefully restored after the bombing of 1940, the church has become a lasting symbol of resilience and reconstruction.

Today, its Gothic architecture forms a striking contrast with the modern skyline that surrounds it, offering a clear link between Rotterdam’s past and present.

Heritage and Contemporary Use

Inside, visitors encounter a range of historical features, including monumental organs, centuries-old tombs and an 18th-century choir screen. The bronze doors by Italian artist Giacomo Manzù are particularly notable, depicting scenes that reflect themes of war and peace.

At the same time, the Laurenskerk remains an active venue. Its programme includes concerts and exhibitions, alongside more unexpected events such as yoga sessions, silent discos and large record fairs. This combination of history and contemporary use gives the building a distinct place in the city.
