The International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA) is the world's leading trade body for festivals and events, recognised as an authoritative authority in the sector. Rotterdam has been named World Festival & Event City by IFEA. This special international recognition underlines Rotterdam's global leadership in building connection, inclusion and innovation.

The official award ceremony took place on 22 September in Palm Springs, USA. Rotterdam Festivals accepted the award on behalf of the city. The international jury praised: ''The community leadership and ongoing commitment to creating a positive local climate that encourages and grows festivals and events. Rotterdam sets the standard for others in our sector worldwide.''

Rotterdam owes this title mainly to the commitment, creativity, energy and perseverance of the city's many festival and event organisers. They ensure that Rotterdam is a lively and attractive city that residents are proud of and visitors love to come to.

Renske Satijn, managing director Rotterdam Festivals: ''This award is recognition for everyone working on festivals and events in Rotterdam. Together with the municipality, partners and residents, organisers show every day how culture connects and moves people forward. That is invaluable in a time of increasing polarisation. Festivals are the antidote to this. They bring people together, give Rotterdammers their magic moments and put our city on the map worldwide.''

The award of the IFEA title puts Rotterdam in the international spotlight as a model city for innovative festivals and events. At the same time, this award is an important moment to reflect on the value of culture for the city. Art, culture and festivals strengthen social cohesion, increase mental resilience and contribute to Rotterdam's attractiveness and international appeal.

Said Kasmi, alderman for Education, Culture and Events: ''Rotterdam is a city that always wants to move forward and gives space to innovation and experimentation. Our festivals and events are living proof of that. They bring people of all ages and backgrounds together, make the city attractive to visitors and strengthen residents' pride. This international recognition is a wonderful confirmation of the strength of our creators and organisers."
