Life-size animals pass through Rotterdam during ICAF

Jim Smit

Rotterdam is getting temporary new residents. Life-size puppet animals will roam the streets. During the anniversary edition of the International Community Arts Festival (ICAF), the international art project The Herds comes to the Netherlands for the first time on 27 and 28 March.

The Herds consists of large animal figures made from fragile and ecological materials. Fleeing from the effects of climate change, the animals move through Rotterdam South and the city centre. The confrontation between city and herd literally makes an abstract theme visible in everyday life.

The project is not a performance just to watch. About 150 Rotterdammers can actively participate and control the animals together with an international artistic team. Recruitment of participants has already started. Experience with art or theatre is not necessary.

ICAF director Anamaria Cruz: ''Rotterdammers from all neighbourhoods are invited to become part of The Herds. You don't have to have experience with theatre or art: curiosity, commitment and a desire to work together are enough.''

Besides two major public moments in the city, there is a complementary programme for professionals, students and primary schools. Thus, The Herds lives not only on the streets, but also in neighbourhoods, schools and conversations that continue longer than the festival itself.
