Wij, beren - eindelijk ons echte verhaal
Artist Marieke ten Berge and writer Lotte Stegeman share a great love for bears. Marieke has regularly encountered polar bears on Spitsbergen for years. Lotte studied brown bears in Alaska.
Together they created a wonderful, humorous non-fiction book that will change your view of the eight bears forever. A selection of Marieke's illustrations can be viewed during the exhibition 'We, bears - finally our real story' in the museum.
In order to portray this deeply impressive species, Marieke wanted to use an illustration technique that would do the bears justice. She chose various graphic printing techniques, ranging from etching in zinc, drypoint etching in copper and printing on Tetra Pak. She was inspired by old prints that were also often made in etching or lithography and used this old technique to give the bear stories in the book a modern twist.
From the rock-solid, unpredictable polar bear in the Arctic to the shy spectacled bear deep in the Andes, from the imposing brown bears in rugged Alaska to the good-humored, hyperactive honey bear in the forests of Borneo... With her flawless etchings and subtle, natural use of color, Marieke takes you into the wild world of the bears who, with 'We, Bears', receive the lifelike portrait they so deserve.
