On average, you spend a third of your life sleeping. At the same time, sleep habits vary enormously. An early bird might be up before sunrise, while a night owl might just go to bed then. Why is this? What does skipping a night do to your body? And: what is sleep, anyway?
In "Sleeping for Dummies," somnologist Dr. Maartje Louter tells you everything you need to know about your sleep. How do you ensure a good night's sleep? What about sleep disorders like narcolepsy? And can you compensate for poor sleep with a healthy lifestyle?
Dr. Maartje Louter is a neurologist, clinical neurophysiologist, and somnologist at Erasmus MC. In addition to her consultations with patients with sleep problems, she conducts supplementary research into neurological disorders, such as EMG, EEG, ultrasounds of carotid vessels and nerves, and surgical monitoring, tremor recordings, and sleep studies.
