On 11 October 2025, Kunstinstituut Melly presents Riet Wijnen: Suitcase Economy, her new project on the ground floor. The exhibition features an experimental canteen and works exploring informal economies, fermentation, preservation, and self-sustainability.
Riet Wijnen: Suitcase Economy
Step into a refreshed MELLY, our bookstore, café, and event space, transformed by Riet Wijnen’s new project, Suitcase Economy, with Linda van Deursen, Waysatta Fernández with Salvador Núñez from Mono Rojo, Jari Nuno / Fat Crayon Creative, Ima-Abasi Okon and Jan Wijnen.
Wijnen opens an experimental canteen that begins with foods and other products carried in suitcases across, from family homes to students rooms, farm to the city, country to country, or continent to continent. From this gesture unfolds an informal economy that considers time and place; fermentation and preservation challenges how we maintain histories and nurture self-sustainability in the face of capitalism.
