Omweg naar huis
Sat'eh and Wijk 1803 are two powerful dance performances by Ali Zanad about memory, identity and the longing for home. With a raw physical dance language and a mix of Arabic and Western influences, he tells personal and universal stories.
In Sat'eh and Wijk 1803, choreographer Ali Zanad investigates what home means when you live between two worlds. Sat'eh – Arabic for “roof” – is a dance performance that revolves around the feeling of home that Ali has been searching for since he came to the Netherlands. Together with three dancers from different backgrounds, he portrays the tension between loss, identity and cultural duality. Western and Arabic styles merge in dance and music, making the friction and discomfort between both worlds palpable. Wijk 1803 is a physical solo that looks back on Ali's youth in Baghdad, on a square full of memories – sometimes playful, sometimes full of threat. Every gesture exudes the scent of dust, stories and the will to survive. Both performances are steeped in personal history, but speak to a wide audience through their emotional complexity and universal themes. The documentary The Missing Piece offers additional insight into the creative process and Ali's search for his place in the world.
