Monofoon
Arend lives in a telephone exchange. Day and night he connects hundreds of callers with each other and everything runs smoothly.
In this tangle of buttons and cables he feels at home; he knows his way around here. Mistakes are not made. No, making mistakes… that is what Arend finds most horrible. He takes his work deadly seriously. Because what would happen if people were connected incorrectly? That would be downright disastrous.
But then, one night, his own phone suddenly rings. A mysterious caller tells him to connect himself. But… who? And why? And how? Beep… beep… beep… What now? And why did that voice sound so terribly familiar?
Director Simon Boer designed and wrote the music, text, decor, light and sound for Monofoon single-handedly, and forged it all into a deeply connected whole. An innovative self-thinking decor full of sensors plays (without a technician) seamlessly together with the actor. The result is a virtuoso family show with the playfulness of live theater and the magic of a Pixar film.
The performance was developed at Theater Sonnevanck on behalf of the Oyfo Techniekmuseum in Hengelo, where the performance is part of the museum zone Verbondenheid, and is inspired by the actual working telephone exchange in the collection.
Monofoon tells a moving story about loneliness and connection, about talking and listening, about the question of how we are really doing.
