MARIE CÉCILE THIJS - SOLO is a retrospective exhibition that celebrates her mastery through a selection of works that reflect her unique view on silence and imagination.
Welcome to the surreal world of Marie Cécile Thijs. Portraits of people, animals, flowers and food all bear her unmistakable signature. Silence is essential. Influences reminiscent of the seventeenth-century Old Masters regularly recur in her work, but her personal interpretation is completely contemporary. Marie Cécile Thijs plays with her subjects by unexpectedly bringing them to life or by freezing them in time and space. Objects become characters. They escape their everyday function and are given a completely new identity. This produces intriguing images in which peace, movement and sometimes humour come together. In the work of Marie Cécile Thijs, the unusual is the norm.
Marie Cécile Thijs specializes in staged photography and created series such as White Collar, Food Portraits, Amazones, Horses, Flowers, Human Angels, Majestic, Elizabeth, Birds & Vases and Green Scenes. These series continue to expand with new work and are therefore never officially closed. In November 2023, Marie Cécile Thijs was named Artist of the Year 2024. Her work is included in various national and international museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego (MOPA). In addition, her work has been shown in numerous international group exhibitions, public and private collections, and at art fairs such as Photo London, Art New York, PhotoFairs Shanghai and TEFAF Maastricht.
