Makandra Theaterwerkplaats voor Ouwe Rotten
'The history of slavery is baggage that we carry with us. Let's unpack it and look at it before it becomes too heavy.'
Makandra is Surinamese and means together. How can we be together when this painful past divides us?
The drum beats, the luggage is unpacked, ancestors are introduced.
In the performance Makandra by the Theaterwerkplaats for Old Hands, six women tell each other stories about their past. They were born in Curacao, in Suriname, in the Netherlands.
A large rug is beaten, the dust slowly falls. The six women know: this is what we have to face. Together. Will you watch and listen?
