Makandra is Surinamese and means together. But how can we be together when this painful past divides us?
Six women come together in Makandra to unravel their past and share it with each other. Born in Curaçao, Suriname and the Netherlands, they bring stories that touch on history, identity and connection. While a large carpet is beaten and the dust slowly settles, what often remained hidden becomes visible. The performance is intimate and penetrating, with room for silence, vulnerability and collective strength. Makandra is a ritual of remembering, healing and carrying together. An ode to the shared journey of women who dare to tell their stories — and find each other in the process.
