KNNV-Natuurcafé - De wondere wereld van Libellen

Dragonfly expert Paul Schrijvershof invites nature lovers on an inspiring journey through the enchanting world of dragonflies. During his lecture on Tuesday 3 June, he will share his years of expertise on these elegant flyers that populate our local waters and hunt insects.

Paul Schrijvershof, born and raised in Bloemhof in Rotterdam-Zuid, developed a passion for nature at an early age. "What started as bird watching along the Oude Maas, grew into a lifelong fascination for the diversity of insects in our country," he says.

Visitors will be introduced to the complete life cycle of dragonflies: from laying eggs in water plants to the underwater larval stage, which can sometimes last for years. A highlight is the spectacular moment when the larva crawls out of the water, its skin bursts open and the adult dragonfly emerges.

"Even in the urban environment of Rotterdam you can discover beautiful dragonfly species," emphasizes Schrijvershof, who was coordinator of an insect working group in the Krimpenerwaard between 2001 and 2011. "With my stories I hope to inspire people to go on a journey of discovery themselves."

This evening is a joint initiative of KNNV Natuurlijk Rotterdam and Het Natuurhistorisch, with financial support from the Rotterdam Environmental Centre.
