Iconententoonstelling in de Laurenskerk
An exhibition about resilience, faith and the power of art in times of war.
The icons are painted on discarded ammunition crates used during the war in Ukraine and are a powerful symbol of hope and survival in times of violence.
The icons were created by Olexandr Klymenko and Sofia Atlantova, icon painters from Kyiv. They began their project in 2014 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The artists noticed that the lids of the ammunition boxes were very similar to the wooden boards on which classical icons are painted. This was the inspiration for this special series of artworks. The icons combine modernity and tradition. They tell the story of war and peace, human suffering and hope.
The exhibition has now traveled around the world and can be seen from July 2 in the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam. The icons are for sale, the proceeds will go to a military hospital in Kyiv.
Check the opening hours in advance, the Laurenskerk may be closed due to an event.
