GEMENE GRONDEN
The exhibition Common Grounds focuses on nine Rotterdam social housing complexes where shared outdoor spaces form the heart of the community.
With scale models and stories she reveals the rich history of social housing, full of ideals and challenges. Discover how to design truly liveable, communal places in a city that has to work for everyone.
The exhibition GEMENE GRONDEN highlights nine social housing complexes in Rotterdam in which shared outdoor spaces play an essential role for the community. Social housing in Rotterdam is on average 40% smaller than owner-occupied homes, while its residents earn on average 40% less than the average income. As a result, public outdoor spaces are an indispensable asset for many—a place for recreation, rest and meeting.
The series of scale models tells a history of Rotterdam's social housing: of large-scale, sometimes intimidating residential buildings and of the ideals, successes, blunders and controversies that have shaped social housing. One question is central: how do you design common lands?
