De gevangenis
In De Gevangenis, theatre maker Lara Staal, together with ex-prisoners such as rapper Freddie Konings, investigates the failing Belgian prison system. Through personal testimonies and music, they bring the harsh reality of detention to life.
Prisons are overcrowded, the buildings are outdated, there is a shortage of staff, and the guidance towards reintegration is lacking. It is no coincidence that the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and the European Court of Human Rights have already reprimanded Belgium several times for the inhuman treatment of prisoners. In the performance De Gevangenis (The Prison), theatre maker Lara Staal examines this failing system under the influence of ex-prisoners. What is it like for prisoners to experience the abuses in person? Are ex-prisoners scarred for life? And is there really no more humane alternative?
