Sarmast is a groundbreaking trio in which Iranian, Armenian and Western music merge into a new, compelling sound. An intimate encounter between tradition, improvisation and modern sound worlds.
Sarmast – Persian for “intoxicated” or “ecstatic” – is a trio that blurs musical boundaries. Reza Mirjalali (Tar, Oud, Kalimba), Loek van den Berg (saxophone, Duduk) and Saghar Kadem (Tombak) combine their backgrounds in the Radif and Maqam traditions, jazz and modern compositions into a unique musical journey. Improvisation and experimentation are central, resulting in a sound world that is both intimate and compelling. Expect lyrical lines, rich rhythms and surprising interactions between the musicians. Sarmast is not a fusion, but a new language in which East and West find each other. This performance is part of a series in which contemporary makers explore new directions, from acoustic to experimental. Admission is free – reservations are recommended.
